Throw up your horns, Brütal Legend is Steam-bound

brutallegendheader

The Brütal Legend Steam listing discovered earlier in the month by NeoGAF has been proven to be true: Double Fine’s 2009 heavy metal-infused action adventure/stealth RTS (see what I did there?) will be landing on Steam sometime this year.

The game is currently in beta, with a pre-purchase available right now. Steam users who pre-purchase the game get it for $14.99 with immediate access to the multiplayer beta. Paying a few more dollars nets you the game’s original soundtrack.

The game will come with all the graphical improvements you’d expect from a console-to-PC port, including FXAA and SSA, higher resolutions, and better latency for online play. Upcoming updates for the game include an uncapped framerate, better shadows and increased draw distance. Suffice to say: this is going to be the prettiest version of the game by far.

Despite the game’s repetitive nature, I heavily enjoyed its humor and fantastic setting. Being a metalhead also has a bunch to do with my loving it.

I wonder if there will be a custom soundtrack option…then we could all finally add some Iron Maiden tracks that the original console versions were sorely lacking. Proceed for the reveal trailer.

I’ll admit, I was lukewarm on this port until you said “custom soundtrack.” Now I can add all of my Scandinavian power metal, a facet of the Heavy Metal genre that was sadly underrepresented in the game. NEEDS MOAR NIGHTWISH.

In light of Tim Schafer’s jokes on Double Fine Adventure about adding and then taking out RTS elements, What I’d REALLY love to see in a Brutal Legend re-release would be an entire reworking of the RTS sequences into a Dynasty Warriors-style slaughterfest. The only thing more metal than directing an army of metalheads in battle is mowing down nearly the entire enemy army BY YOURSELF.
