Former Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi passed away yesterday, and since then there’s been a social media outpouring of fans expressing their condolences. While Nintendo had kept its social media channels silent in remembrance of him, one Japanese game composer has decided to pay his respects in a very fitting manner.
Hirokazu “Hip” Tanaka, known for composing the music for Metroid, Super Mario Land, Earthbound and more, has released two remixes dedicated to the late former president. The first is a remix of Super Mario Land’s ending credits, “Rocket Ship Ride,” and the second being a remix of Metroid’s ending theme.
Yamauchi’s successor, current president Satoru Iwata, released the following statement regarding his predecessor’s passing:
“We will continue to treasure the values Yamauchi taught us — that what makes you unique lies at the core of entertainment. And we at Nintendo will continue to change the company flexibly to adapt to the times, as Yamauchi did, to carry on his spirit.”
Have a listen to both tunes after the break. I can’t think of a better way to send off the businessman responsible for kicking off Nintendo’s rise to the top of the mountain.
